Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan

Currituck is participating in a regional hazard mitigation plan with several other counties and municipalities in the Northeast including; Camden, Chowan, Dare, Hertford, Pasquotank, and Perquimans. Mitigation Plans form the foundation for a community's long-term strategy to reduce disaster losses and break the cycle of disaster damage, reconstruction, and repeated damage.

The planning process is as important as the plan itself. It creates a framework for risk-based decision making to reduce damages to lives, property, and the economy from future disasters. In addition, participating in this planning effort is a large part of our continued participation and subsequent discounts in the Community Rating System (CRS). Ultimately being prepared will save lives and money.

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), Community Rating System ( CRS), and Hazard Mitigation Planning are all interrelated programs that support and carry out an overall mission to prevent the loss of life, enhance public safety, and mitigate against future hazards.

The NFIP's CRS program is a voluntary incentive program that recognizes and encourages community floodplain management activities that exceed the minimum NFIP requirements.

As a result, flood insurance premium rates are discounted to reflect the reduced flood risk resulting from the community actions meeting the three goals of the CRS:

  1. Reduce flood damage to insurable property;
  2. Strengthen and support the insurance aspects of the NFIP, and
  3. Encourage a comprehensive approach to floodplain management.

As part of the County's involvement and commitment to involve the public, a staff and citizen stakeholder committee has been formed as a way to fain feedback to provide on hazard assessment, goal setting, review of possible activities and mitigate hazards, and development of a draft action plan .
