Currituck County Flood Outreach brochure is packed full of useful information.
Preliminary Flood Maps
New preliminary flood maps have been released for Currituck County. The maps are available online at Flood Risk Information System (FRIS) government website. Check the hand out on "How to Access the Preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps Through The FRIS Website" for the best way to locate property on the Flood Risk Information System website.
Please note that these maps will not be effective until they are formally adopted and the process will take at least a year. Stay tuned as county staff will be updating the public on the adoption process. A public information meeting will also be scheduled.
The preliminary flood maps summary shows a significant decrease in the number of Currituck properties located in Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHA).
If your property is no longer mapped in a special flood hazard area; that does not mean that it is not subject to flooding. It is still important to purchase flood insurance as more than 20% of all flood insurance claims through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) are on properties that are not located in special flood hazard areas.
Please contact Jason Litteral or Jennie Turner with any questions related to the new flood maps and their adoption.
