Motor Vehicle Tax

Vehicle property taxes and registration fees are now paid together to the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV). The new "Tax & Tag Together" system was implemented in 2013 as a more convenient and efficient method for taxpayers to pay their vehicle tax. One no longer has to visit the local tax office and/or mail a separate check for the payment of the taxes.

When a vehicle is due for renewal and your address is current with NCDMV, you will receive one statement listing both the vehicle registration fee and taxes due. This notice with be sent approximately 60 days prior to the vehicle's registration expiration. The total amount due on the combined statement is to be made payable to NCDMV. You will not be able to renew your registration unless both the taxes and registration fee are paid at the same time. (NOTE: If required, the vehicle must have a new inspection performed before the taxes and registration fee can be paid.)

When registering a vehicle for the first time you must pay the tax at the time of registration or you will receive a "Limited Registration" sticker. This sticker is good for 60 days and you must pay the taxes within those 60 days.

Taxes/Registration can be paid by mail, at a local NCDMV office, or online at

The assessed value of a vehicle is determined on January 1st of the year in which the taxes become due. One can appeal their assessed value by submitting a Motor Vehicle Appeal Form within 30 days of the date on the original tax bill or prior to the taxes becoming delinquent.
